This mural is made from images of iconic and sometimes overlooked architecture of Augusta, Georgia and funded through Westobou Festival. I am interested in how shadows distort and change our landscape. The shadows coming off of a fire escape will alter the look of the building they are cast upon. Shadows can warp the understanding or recognition of our environment, simultaneously occupying our space and just passing through. Part of my practice has been to notice what I notice, taking stalk of the interesting shapes that shadows allow our landscape. I took images of local Augusta architecture during moments where the shadows celebrated the drama of each object or building. I had many influential and pivotal years in Augusta. The images used for this piece came from the James Brown statue, Sacred Heart Cultural Center, the Handkerchief Factory and its mural by Leonard “Porkchop” Zimmerman, the Miller Theater, the JB Whites water tower, and the steps of a local skate spot. These are the sculptural and architectural snippets that continue to influence my work to this day.
